🚩 Ingredients to Avoid in Almond Milk

Carrageenan

Carrageenan is a common thickener in dairy-free milks, but it’s not one we recommend. Research has linked it to inflammation and digestive issues, which is why we flag it in Trash Panda. The simple fix? Choose almond milk without it.

Gums

You’ve probably seen gums like cellulose gum, guar gum, and xanthan gum listed on ingredient labels. They’re used to thicken liquids, keep everything evenly mixed, and create that “smooth” texture.
Gums are a hallmark of more heavily processed foods, and can lead to digestive issues like gas and bloating. If your goal is to keep your diet simple and minimally processed, it’s worth swapping them out for cleaner options when possible.

Barista Blends

Those “barista” almond milks you see at the store? They’re designed to foam and froth beautifully for lattes, but they often come with a tradeoff: extra oils and additives. Many include seed oils, which are high in omega-6 fatty acids. Consuming too many omega-6s can throw off your balance of fats and contribute to inflammation. If you don’t need the café-style foam, you’ll be better off with a simpler option.

The Good Stuff

The best almond milks keep it simple. Look for short ingredient lists without gums, carrageenan, or unnecessary oils.
Here are a few Trash Panda–approved favorites:
Made with just filtered water and almonds, this one is as clean as it gets. Plus, it uses more almonds than most brands, making it creamier and more nutrient-dense.
Organic, unsweetened, and free from gums or carrageenan. A solid option if you want a simple, clean-label almond milk that’s widely available.
Certified organic and made with only filtered water, almonds, and sea salt. No gums, no fillers, just a straightforward, clean choice that’s easy to love.
