Bachan's, the Japanese barbecue sauce brand, launched its first mayonnaise on October 26, 2026. The line comes in Original, Spicy and Black Garlic, and it's sold only at Whole Foods Market nationwide.

Each 11.2-ounce bottle has a suggested price of $8.99. Founder and CEO Justin Gill says the team spent "more than four years perfecting" the recipe.

Free-range yolks and no artificial preservatives are good to see. The first ingredient is still a seed oil.

What's in Bachan's Japanese mayo

Japanese-style mayo uses egg yolks instead of whole eggs, plus rice vinegar. Bachan's follows that: all three flavors use free-range egg yolks and rice vinegar.

Bachan's lists expeller-pressed high-oleic sunflower oil as the first ingredient on each mayo's product page. Here is the full list for The Original Japanese Mayo:

Ingredientes completos

Expeller-Pressed High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Free-Range Egg Yolks (Yolks, Salt), Water, Cane Sugar, Rice Vinegar, Organic White Vinegar, Sea Salt, Yeast Extract, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Rosemary Extract, Mustard Flour

Spicy adds red jalapeño, habanero and cayenne peppers, garlic and toasted sesame oil. Black Garlic adds black garlic, garlic and toasted sesame oil.

Cane sugar is on the label, but the nutrition panel lists 0 grams of added sugar per tablespoon. A tablespoon has 90 calories and 10 grams of fat.

MSG isn't on the list. Yeast extract is, in all three flavors. It adds savory flavor and naturally contains glutamate, the same compound MSG supplies.

All three contain egg. Spicy and Black Garlic also contain sesame.

What it means if you avoid seed oils

Sunflower oil is a seed oil. The high-oleic kind is bred to be higher in monounsaturated fat than regular sunflower oil, and expeller-pressed means it's pressed out mechanically rather than extracted with solvents.

If you skip seed oils entirely, this mayo doesn't fit. Scan any jar with Trash Panda to check its oil before you buy.
