General Mills says it has removed artificial colors from all of its US cereals, including Lucky Charms and Trix. The company announced it on August 26, 2026.

The colors now come from fruit, vegetables and spices such as turmeric and paprika, according to the Associated Press. General Mills says 90% of its US retail products are now free of artificial colors.

Some Betty Crocker cake mixes and Fruit Roll-Ups still use them. General Mills says those switch by the end of 2027.

Bethany Quam, president of General Mills' cereal business, says the change "reflects how we are evolving with consumer needs."

General Mills tried dye-free Trix about a decade ago. It brought the artificial colors back after shoppers missed the bright colors.

Production changes following new regulations earlier this year. Still plenty to be aware of in these products.

Other cereal makers and stores are doing the same

On August 6, WK Kellogg said Froot Loops and Apple Jacks made with natural colors will start shipping to retailers by the end of 2026.

Target said it would stop selling cereals with artificial colors by the end of May 2026. Walmart is removing synthetic dyes from its store brands by January 2027.

What it means if you buy Lucky Charms or Trix

General Mills hasn't said which dyes it replaced. The new boxes carry a "Colors from Natural Sources" claim on the front. If you still have an older box of Lucky Charms or Trix, check its ingredient list for artificial colors.
