Vegan with Trash Panda

Trash Panda is a food scanner app that reads the ingredient list for you. Scan a barcode at the grocery store and it flags every ingredient sourced from animals, so you can tell whether a product is vegan in seconds.

Animal ingredients hide behind names like whey, carmine and shellac. Here's how Trash Panda helps you catch them, plus our vegan product lists and guides.

How Trash Panda helps you eat vegan

  • Flags animal ingredients. Scan any barcode and Trash Panda marks ingredients sourced from animals, including dairy, eggs and honey, and less obvious ones like carmine, shellac and vitamin D3.
  • Tailors your results. Set Vegan as an ingredient preference and Trash Panda customizes your scan results around it. Ingredient preferences come with a Trash Panda subscription.
  • Rates the whole ingredient list. Every product gets a rating based on all of its ingredients, so you can see what else is in a plant-based product, from gums and seed oils to added sugar.
  • Explains every flag. Tap any ingredient to see why it's flagged and read the research behind it.

Where animal ingredients hide

Dairy and egg under other names

Whey, casein and sodium caseinate come from milk. Albumin and lysozyme come from eggs. They show up in protein bars, breads and "non-dairy" creamers. Trash Panda flags all of them.

Carmine, shellac and gelatin

Carmine is a red dye made from insects. Shellac, a shiny candy coating, comes from lac bugs. Gelatin is made from animal skin and bones. All three turn up in candy and snacks, and Trash Panda flags each one.

Honey and vitamin D3

Honey is an animal product, and so is most vitamin D3, which is usually made from lanolin in sheep's wool. Trash Panda flags both. Vitamin D2 and lichen-based D3 are vegan.
