Tree Nut-Free with Trash Panda
Trash Panda is a food scanner app that reads the ingredient list for you. Scan a barcode at the grocery store and it flags every ingredient made from or containing tree nuts, so you can rule a product out in seconds.
Whether you're shopping for a tree nut allergy, your own or your child's, here's how Trash Panda helps, what it covers and what it doesn't, plus our tree nut-free product list.
How Trash Panda helps you avoid tree nuts
- Flags tree nuts in the ingredient list. Scan any barcode and Trash Panda marks tree nut ingredients, including ones that don't say "nut," like marzipan, praline and gianduja.
- Tailors your results. Set tree nuts as an ingredient preference and Trash Panda customizes your scan results around it. Ingredient preferences come with a Trash Panda subscription.
- Rates the whole ingredient list. Every product gets a rating based on all of its ingredients, so you can see what else is in a nut-free snack, from food dyes and seed oils to added sugar.
- Explains every flag. Tap any ingredient to see why it's flagged and read the research behind it.

If you have a tree nut allergy
Trash Panda reads ingredient lists. It can't tell you whether a product was made on shared equipment with tree nuts, and it doesn't certify anything as nut-free. Use it to rule products out fast, and check the allergen statement and any "may contain" warning on anything you plan to eat.
Peanuts aren't covered
Peanuts are legumes, not tree nuts, and Trash Panda doesn't have a separate peanut flag. Don't rely on the tree nut flag for a peanut allergy.
Coconut and shea
The tree nut flag is broad. It also covers coconut and shea, so you'll see it on coconut milk and products made with shea butter. Whether you need to avoid those is a question for your allergist.
