Soy-Free with Trash Panda

Trash Panda is a food scanner app that reads the ingredient list for you. Scan a barcode at the grocery store and it flags every ingredient that comes from soybeans, so you can rule a product out in seconds.

Soy is in a huge share of packaged food, often as oil, lecithin or protein. Whether you avoid it because of an allergy or by choice, here's how Trash Panda helps, plus our soy-free product list.

How Trash Panda helps you eat soy-free

  • Flags soy in the ingredient list. Scan any barcode and Trash Panda marks ingredients made from soy, including ones that don't say "soy," like tamari, miso and hydrolyzed vegetable protein.
  • Tailors your results. Set soy as an ingredient preference and Trash Panda customizes your scan results around it. Ingredient preferences come with a Trash Panda subscription.
  • Rates the whole ingredient list. Every product gets a rating based on all of its ingredients, so you can see what else is in a soy-free product, from food dyes and seed oils to added sugar.
  • Explains every flag. Tap any ingredient to see why it's flagged and read the research behind it.

Soy allergy or preference

If you have a soy allergy

Trash Panda reads ingredient lists. It can't tell you whether a product was made on shared equipment with soy, and it doesn't certify anything as soy-free. Use it to rule products out fast, and check the allergen statement on anything you plan to eat.

Soybean oil, soy lecithin and "vegetable oil"

Trash Panda flags soybean oil and soy lecithin as soy. It also flags vague terms like "vegetable oil," which is often soybean oil but doesn't say so. Some people with a soy allergy tolerate highly refined soybean oil or soy lecithin, so ask your allergist what you need to avoid.

If you avoid soy by choice

Cutting soy usually means cutting a lot of ultra-processed food, since soybean oil and soy protein are cheap fillers. Trash Panda shows you where soy turns up and rates the rest of the ingredient list.
