Question 1

What products does Pirate's Booty make?

Accepted Answer

Pirate's Booty makes baked puffs made from corn meal and rice flour and blended with real aged white cheddar. The range is built almost entirely around that one cheese puff, sold in single bags, family sizes and multipacks, with a bolder Cheddar Blast version, seasonal and character shapes, and variety packs alongside it.

Question 2

What makes Pirate's Booty different from other cheese puffs?

Accepted Answer

Real cheese, and baking instead of frying. Robert Ehrlich created Pirate's Booty in 1987 as a cheese puff made with actual cheddar rather than a cheese-flavored coating. Baked does not mean oil-free, though: canola oil runs through every bag we've scanned, so the front-of-bag story is only part of the ingredient picture.

Question 3

Is Pirate's Booty healthy?

Accepted Answer

Pirate's Booty deserves a closer look. Every product we've scanned so far lands in our Better Options Available tier, not the top one, and the real cheese doesn't change that: canola oil, natural flavor and added acids show up across the range. Scan the bag in Trash Panda to see exactly which flagged ingredients it carries before you buy.

Question 4

Is Pirate's Booty gluten-free?

Accepted Answer

Hershey says Pirate's Booty snacks are gluten-free and certified kosher, and the core puffs are made from corn and rice rather than wheat. They are not dairy-free or vegan, since milk, whey and cheddar are central to the recipe. Multipacks and variety packs can include different snacks from the core bag, so scan the exact pack in Trash Panda before relying on a gluten-free claim.

Question 5

Who owns Pirate's Booty?

Accepted Answer

Pirate's Booty is owned by The Hershey Company and made by its Hershey Salty Snacks division. Robert Ehrlich created the snack in 1987 at Robert's American Gourmet Food; B&G Foods acquired that business in 2013 and sold the brand to Hershey in 2018.
